Re: Talking turkey

I have been able to store and keep usable some mouth calls for several seasons. The only two Woodhaven calls purchased were no good after two seasons- disappointing and they were not cheap. The cheaper Primos and Quaker boy have been survivors longer. Twin reeds are efficient enough for me. Getting a response from a gobbler is always a rush!

Re: Talking turkey

Set up camp and scouted. More water than this time last year. For sure a wet winter. Mostly hog rootings but betwixt them some gobbler tracks. I was hoping for more prescribed burns but only a small one. Anyway the quest is on and I am focused. The boots stayed dry and shed the mud easily. The coffee always tastes better out there and I got one good night's sleep. Spring beckons!

Re: Talking turkey

Scouted again. Observed finally the quarry and what a thrill to play the wind and get close! You study the tracks, the position of the sun, the available shade and cover, play out in your mind the possible routes, and daydream. The present time change becomes a new variable but it will be history in a couple of weeks. Good to break in the boots and hear again the woods' music and alternatively admire the rise and setting of the sunlight. Spring is in your heart and also renewal, much like you felt in November, when you coursed out onto the marsh...

Re: Talking turkey

Same here on new boots and never have had a close encounter with a snake but will worry less now.

I didnít hear or see a thing except other hunters all weekend. One chuckle head decided to hit a tree and tell FWC it happened at 0600; truck was smashed at 0530 when I drove by.

That was the only drama, all other hunters were cordial and no issues with being setup to close too.

Re: Talking turkey

You got to hunt! I was going to try Big Cypress but will save up energy for north of sr 70. Cordiality is a plus- I know if I see a vehicle ahead of me I will go to plan B or C, D and so on.

Re: Talking turkey

Big gobbler tracks are truly inspiring, saw a caracara , been a while. Sandhills are now a spring fixture. Camp is quiet, expecting stars and maybe a coyote in the wee hours...

Re: Talking turkey

Only saw one hen this morning but lots of tracks - still havenít heard a gobble yet but the 7 or so miles keeps the heart pumping.

Need that gobble to get the heart pumping without all the walking

Re: Talking turkey

Well got to hunt two days, morning and afternoon on one of them. Heard gobbling and that was good. WMA camp closed on march 23, so i headed home with my small camper the afternoon before. Wish i lived near there as it will be open for hunting but not camping. I felt fatigued on the all-day version. A hunter who was scouting kind of messed up my afternoon attempt. Frankly i hope, in the future, that we return to the 1 pm format. My best wishes to all!
