Lab Pup & Medication Amount

We have an 8 month old male lab -- he weighs about 70 pounds. He has ben getting a rash between his back legs. We did an allergy shot and that did seem to clear things up for a little bit but now they want to hit him with antibiotics.

So we got the antibiotics at Publix but the dosage just seems so high.

They are 500mg tablets of Cephalexin that he is supposed to "Take 2 by mouth twice a day".

We did call the vet and they said this was correct, but we really wanted a second opinion on this. I really hate giving a pup this level of meds.

Does this seem right?

Thanks

Re: Lab Pup & Medication Amount

So sorry. I missed this, did not get an email. Don't know why.

The dose is 10mg/lb twice daily. 700mg twice a day. Too big for 500mg alone. You could ask for 1@500mg and 1@ 250mg and be correct in the dose. Some will also do 500mg three times a day. That is hard for most owners.

One trick I have become a big fan of is to put any patient, dog or cat, getting antibiotics on yogurt (or a probiotic). Dogs and most cats like yogurt and it is cheap. A TBSP a day for big dog seems to be right.
